Some states have passed legislation to require seniors to take additional tests for the issue or renewal of a driver's license beginning at a certain age. These laws have been passed to protect both seniors and other drivers as age-related diseases, such as memory loss or macular degeneration, sometimes develop slowly and make driving and other tasks more difficult.
Sometimes a senior may be ready to retire from driving and the additional testing requirements offer them an opportunity to start the conversation about transportation alternatives with their friends and family. Other times, a family member or physician may recommend a supplemental driving performance evaluation because of changes in physical or mental conditions.
